Tokyo Dream. Yonas Kinde became the first ever refugee to complete the Tokyo Marathon in the elite division of the race on Sunday. He finished the race in 2 hours 24 minutes despite being slowed down by a stomach cramp. He said hearing his name being called by the cheering crowd gave him strength to continue. “I dreamed about running in Tokyo since I was a child,” he said. “It is one of the greatest road races in the world.”

 

Soccer unites. Channel 4 reports that some of the UK’s top football clubs are inviting young refugees to participate in weekly training sessions. Some of those in the programme arrived in the UK without their parents when they were as young as 13. “Football brings them together,” said former footballer Gary Lineker, who supports the initiative. “A lot of them won’t speak English yet, but football is kind of a universal language.”

 

Video game saving lives. Lual Mayen has developed a video game that puts users in the shoes of refugees as they flee violence and search for food and water. Now head of his own video game company in the United States, Mayen spent his first 22 years in a refugee camp in northern Uganda and drew on his and his family’s experiences to develop the game which is called Salaam, an Arabic greeting meaning peace.

Soap making. A group of Syrian refugee women at Za’atari camp in Jordan learned how to make soap as a way to support their families. Now they’re distributing their hand-made soaps to other refugees so they can protect themselves from COVID-19.

 

Giving back. A group of Syrian refugees in Switzerland are helping elderly and unwell people in their neighbourhoods to stay home and protect themselves from the coronavirus by doing their shopping for them. “We live, and are still living, a crisis as refugees,” said Shadi Shhadeh, who enlisted his Syrian friends to set up the network. “That makes us probably in a better position to understand that there is a crisis and how to help.”
